Celebrate Diwali in St Albans

Diwali is a five-day celebration celebrated by Hindus in Britain and around the world. It is perhaps the most well-known of the Indian festivals and it occurs on the fifteenth day of the Hindu month of Kartika (during October/November in the Gregorian calendar). This year Diwali will fall on Sunday, October 30 2016.
To welcome Diwali this year Bollywood Nights in St Albans is planning to bring together people who love music and culture from the Indian subcontinent and beyond. The First Day, First Show, will be a fun-filled evening for all the family. Anandamela, a club formed by the local British-Asian community, will present an evening of live Bollywood songs and dance, a first of its kind in St Albans. The First Day, First show will take place on Saturday 22nd October 2016 from 7pm Onwards at Abbey Theatre, Westminster Lodge, Holywell Hill, St Albans, Postcode: AL1 2DL, Tel: 01727 857861
The festival of Diwali celebrates the victory of good over evil, light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance, the word literally means 'rows of lighted lamps' and is known as the 'festival of lights' because houses, shops and public places are decorated with small earthenware oil lamps called diyas. For many Indians this five day festival honours Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, lamps are lit to help Lakshmi find her way into people's homes.  They also celebrate one of the Diwali legends, which tells of the return of Rama and Sita to Rama's kingdom after fourteen years of exile.
