Summer of Sport 2019

One of the great local natural assets available to those who live in St Albans and Harpenden are the Dunstable Downs. This is where the Dunstable Downs and Whipsnade Estate are hosting a summer of sport. There will be tons of activity this summer in their extensive chalk grassland that is also designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty AONB.

You can stand on top of Dunstable Downs and take in the breath-taking landscape that has been sculpted over time by the environment enjoyed by generations. For the Dunstable Downs Summer of Sport why not head out from your St Albans or Harpenden home to try out this beautiful spot so close to London and maybe try your hand at a new sporting activity

Every day through July and August, from 10.00 to 16.00 there will be a selection of games and sports available to suit all the family. Why not get over there and see how many sports you can take part in. There will be football, cricket, archery, badminton and their 'Borrow Box', full of games from which you can take your pick and enjoy the great outdoors.

The wind-swept ridge also provides a great location for a number of air sports, especially kite flying. On calmer days it's ideal for a picnic. There are also several Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) designated for the quality of the chalk grasslands. As well as two Scheduled Ancient Monuments (Five Knolls and Medieval Rabbit Warrens) and many other historical features.

The Dunstable Downs so close to St Alban's and Harpenden really do offer a great day out with the family. Not only is the Summer of Sport available to all there is so much else on offer. From the fascinating a fascinating history of the downs and an abundance of plants and wildlife to seen from the footpaths that cross the historic chalky grasslands.
