Harpenden Easter Egg Hunt

On Friday 30th March 2018 between 1 pm and 4 pm the Harpenden Easter Egg Hunt will take place at Harpenden Cricket Club on Harpenden Common. The Harpenden Easter Egg Hunt is hosted by the Friends of Harpenden Academy. The hunt is suitable for children of all ages.  Tickets cost £5 per child and can be purchased from Thorns on the High Street, or online. The ticket includes an Easter egg prize, free craft activities and an appearance from the Easter bunny!

For many families, Easter just isn’t Easter without an Easter egg hunt. Children across the country will be rushing around their homes or gardens searching for chocolate eggs this weekend.  But why do we go hunting for chocolate eggs laid by a bunny at Easter?
In many pre-Christian societies, eggs, of course, held associations with spring and new life. But the Easter egg hunt is from Germany. Some suggest that it dates back to the late 16th century when the Protestant reformer Martin Luther organised egg hunts for his congregation.

In the Lutheran tradition, the Easter egg hunt is linked to the Easter Bunny or the Easter Hare as he was originally known. Hares were associated with fertility and custom had it that the hare would bring a basket of brightly painted eggs for all the children who had been good, to be hidden around the house and garden for them to find.
This tradition, a bit like Christmas was reinvented by Queen Victoria who helped popularise Easter egg hunts. As a child, Victoria enjoyed egg hunts at Kensington Palace. On Sunday 7 April 1833, the 14-year-old Princess Victoria wrote in her diary: ‘Mama did some pretty painted & ornamented eggs, & we looked for them’.

As family life became more of a priority for the expanding Victorian middle classes the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Easter egg hunts became more popular. The Harpenden Easter egg hunt is always popular so make sure you have your tickets.
