South Pacific, if you hadn’t guessed, is set on an island paradise during The Second World War. In the joyful musical theatre piece which is a classic, there are two parallel love stories threatened by the dangers of prejudice and war. South Pacific is jam-packed with classic tunes such as 'There is nothing like a dame', 'Bali Ha'i' and 'Gonna wash that man right outta my hair'.
The musical "Oklahoma!" first charmed audiences on Broadway years ago. And the appeal of the works of Rodgers & Hammerstein has never faded since. The show, the first by the team of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, was a smash when it opened in 1943. Over the next 16 years, they would take audiences from Oklahoma to the South Pacific, to the court of Siam, and finally to those Austrian hills so alive with you-know-what.
Strangely enough, Rodgers and Hammerstein seemed destined for each other with a shared history worthy of one of their own stories, both grew up in Manhattan, both went to Columbia University, and both married women named Dorothy!
The show will reveal an enchanted Harpenden evening not to be missed. Harpenden Musical Theatre will be transporting their audiences to sunnier climes as they perform this classic at Harpenden Public Halls in March. This year Harpenden Musical Theatre is supporting the local charity, Harpenden Mencap who celebrate their 60th year and have set themselves the enormous goal of raising £60,000 during 2019.
