Harpenden is full of life and a variety of activities. Coming up from Friday 6th September 2019 - Sunday 8th September 2019, across various locations in Southdown, Harpenden, AL5 is the South Down Festival.

If you are new to Harpenden or new to South Down Harpenden the invite is to join in on a lively weekend packed with events taking place across Southdown! Residents and local organisations have come together to put on a fantastic array of events for the community in aid of a local and a national charity and as a great way to get out and meet people and find out about the area.

On Friday night there is a live comedy night at The Plough and Harrow. On Saturday morning there is Southdown fete at Grove School field and a mini beer festival will be brewing at the Carpenters Arms. Alongside this, the Harpenden trust Open House will be at The Trust Halls and a quiz night, as well as live rock and roll, will be on offer at The Plough and Harrow later that evening. On Sunday the min beer festival continues with live music from Alligators and the Low Lamps. The events are all run in aid of the Royal Marsden NHS Trust and Harpenden Trust.

Southdown sits on the edge of Harpenden, tucked away between the station and the vast Harpenden Common. There is more of a mix of property with some great post-war architecture set amid numerous 19th-century brick houses and pretty green spaces. On top of the South Down Festival, there are a host of regular recreational activities available to visitors and residents alike. You can feed the ducks on the Common at Southdown Ponds, have a picnic in Hay Field and then explore the old clay mines at Brickle Dells. Golf is also popular with an 18-hole golf course on the edge of Harpenden, accessible to private members and visitors on arrangement.
