Medieval jousting at Knebworth

Hertfordshire attractions really start to kick in as the days get longer and you can more easily get out and about from St Albans and Harpenden. At Easter time one of the favourite family outings to Knebworth House is on this Easter weekend. On Sunday 21st April 2019 and Monday 22nd April 2019 at Knebworth Barns, Knebworth House, Knebworth, SG1 2AX from 11 am there is loads to do and see.

The annual Easter Medieval Jousting event is on at no additional charge and the magnificent turrets and towers of Knebworth House provide a spectacular backdrop to the costumed knights on majestic warhorses galloping at full tilt across the arena in a fantastic display of horsemanship.

There are two scheduled jousting displays on both days at 12.30 pm and 2.30 pm (dependent on the weather). The crowds are encouraged to cheer and jeer the Knights of Arkley as they demonstrate their skills in hand-to-hand combat. This year there will also be the Green Dragon Bowmen offering visitors the chance to try some archery; there is a small charge of £2 for six arrows.

If you have never been to Knebworth House you are in for a treat. The turrets, domes and gargoyles of its exterior silhouetted against the sky do not prepare you for what to expect inside. The House has stood for many years longer than the Victorian decoration suggests; the stucco hides from view a red brick house dating back to the Tudor times.

It may be the case that the novelist, playwright and politician Sir Edward Bulwer Lytton; author of the words “it was a dark and stormy night” and “the pen is mightier than the sword” helped Knebworth House first achieved fame in Victorian times but every generation of the Lytton family has left something of its style and taste; making Knebworth an extraordinary walk through 500 years of British history.
