Best St Albans and Harpenden takeaway…

If at the end of last year you didn’t have a chance to check out some of the winners of the 2016 St Albans and Harpenden food and drink awards, a cold grey 2017 evening might be the best time to sample the best local takeaway. Godfrey’s Fish and Chips on the High Street in Harpenden won the coveted local prize last year.

Luke Godfrey, Owner and Manager of Godfrey’s says, “I opened Godfrey’s in 2012, with my mum and dad, who have worked in the fish and chip industry for over 30 years. We take pride in serving simple but delicious fish and chips and being at the heart of the local community.” Not only do they offer a tasty take out fish supper they pride themselves on only using fish that is fully sustainable. They were the first takeaway and restaurant in Hertfordshire to have full Marine Stewardship council certification. They also make sure all their packaging is completely compostable, use 100% green electricity generated through solar, wind and tidal power and their restaurant toilets are flushed using rainwater! They recycle all paper, card, glass, tins and plastic and any food waste goes to an anaerobic digester – producing compost and power.

Nationally last, year two local fish and chip, The Ridgeway Fish Bar in St Albans and Godfrey’s in Harpenden were involved in the 2016 National Fish & Chip Awards. Luke Godfrey, owner of Godfrey’s, said: “It’s brilliant to have been shortlisted and it’s our third year in a row now. “ “For us, it’s just all about the quality of the fish and chips.” Daniel Kumi, owner of The Ridgeway Fish Bar, said: “It’s a great achievement to realise your hard work and dedication has paid off.” So if a fish supper is what you fancy you’ll be spoilt for top quality in St Albans and Harpenden.
