The UK craft gin movement has really taken off in the last few years and we have our very own specialist sprits and champagne boutiques, Tomoka Spirits Boutiques, in St Albans and Harpenden. Tomoka has been championing some of the London gins since the opening of the pioneering Sipsmith distillery in 2009. There are a host of artisan distilleries across London from Mark Mamont’s 58 Gin distilled in a studio workshop under a railway arch in Hackney Downs to the East London Distillery Company’s distillery in Bow Wharf on the southern edge of Victoria Park.
Tomoka Spirits Boutique in St Albans and Harpenden are dedicated to bringing the best quality spirits to Hertfordshire. They like to trace their foundations back to a conversation between three friends over a bottle of aged single malt whisky. They “ developed a love for spirits of all shapes and sizes as cocktail bartenders, we decided that Hertfordshire needed its very own Aladdin’s cave of refined alcoholic delights.”
The name Tomoka has a great back story – it was the name of one of the ship of one Bill McCoy, a legendary rum smuggler during US Prohibition in the 1920s. Bill’s liquor had a reputation for impeccable quality unlike much of the bootleg of the time so if you were drinking some of Bill’s stock you were drinking a quality spirit and his shipments soon became known as the Real McCoy.
Tomoka Spriits regularly host opportunities’ to sample the quality of their stock. If you were looking for a classy event in Harpenden or St Albans you might want to book one of their Scottish Craft Gin Tastings, a private tasting of five artisan gins distilled at craft distilleries in Scotland, made with unusual local botanicals. It costs £15 per guest up to a maximum of 18 people the only condition is they must be at least 18 years old.
