St Albans March Farmers Market

St Albans and Harpenden are so lucky to have markets to enjoy. There are monthly markets in both the city and the town. The next St Albans Farmers market is on 2nd March 2020 between 8 am and 2 pm on St Peter’s Street, St Albans, just opposite the Town Hall. As usual, there will be plenty of local food and drink to enjoy as well as stocking up on seasonal fruit and veg for the week.

If you are new to St Albans or planning on moving to St Albans you will be glad to hear that there are regular farmers markets as an alternative to the supermarkets. Farmers' Markets help local farmers, growers and producers to sell their produce, direct to the public. Cutting out the middle man meaning you can have more control over where your food has come from while supporting local industry.

The markets provide fresh, natural, nutritious food sold to you through a more vibrant and entertaining shopping experience in the beautiful surroundings that are the heart of St Albans. You can expect to find local specialities like local cheeses, top quality meat and game, dairy produce, freshly baked cakes and bread, and hand-crafted goods. But most especially lots of seasonal fruit and vegetables and fresh herbs.

Seasonal fruit and veg available in March come in the form of beetroot, broccoli, artichokes, cardoons, carrot, cauliflower, white cabbage, savoy cabbage, brussels sprouts, chicory, turnip top, spring onion, watercress, beet top, fennel, endive, leek, red radicchio, turnip, spinach, pumpkin. Citrus fruit like oranges tangerine, clementine, lemon, grapefruit, are all in season and some of the autumn English apples and pears are still available.

As winter draws to a close, and buds and sprouts are announcing nature waking up all around St Albans and Harpenden. You could have a go at growing some of your own – buy some seed at St Albans farmers market for homegrown cress or alfalfa sprouts, rich in vitamins perfect at this time of the year.
