St Albans' Athletics

We tend to think of athletics as a summer sport but the hard work goes on in preparation all year in and around St Albans and Harpenden as it does up and down the country. St Albans Athletics club is a small club and their emphasis is on younger athletes.  It was the brainchild of its former president Tom McNab. Tom had been employed by St.Albans District Council to run athletics courses on its newly refurbished track at Westminster Lodge in the 1980s. When the short courses finished many young people wanted to continue with athletics but there was no club in St. Albans.
The parents approached Tom to put the wheels in motion for starting up a Westminster Lodge based athletics club, geared primarily to children between the ages of eight and eighteen. After much publicity the club was finally launched in February 1990. Since that time hundreds of local children have come through the ranks and many County Champions, English Schools Champions, National and International representatives have been produced. On the officials side numerous parents have taken exams and are held in high esteem by the South of England AAA. Parents have even taken coaching qualifications and gone on to hold key positions in UK Athletics.
Despite being a small club it supports athletes of all ages through regular training sessions, coaching and competitions. Facilities include a modern and well equipped leisure complex, running track and surrounding park. St Albans Athletic Club is based, at Westminster Lodge Athletics Track, near the centre of St Albans, Holywell Hill, St Albans, Hertfordshire AL1 2DL
