Singing in St Albans

Perhaps this will inspire you to take a break from any last-minute Christmas shopping this December and go into St Albans Cathedral and join in with a really special event. A Carol service takes place on the Hour in St Albans Cathedral, adjacent to St Albans Christmas Market on Saturday 17th December 2016 on the hour, every hour from 11.00 to 16.00 it is free and no admission ticket is required. Each service lasts just 30 minutes, enough time to sing some uplifting carols with the Cathedral Choirs.  St Albans Cathedral, Sumpter Yard, St Albans  AL1 1BY, Tel: 01727 860780 Web: https://www.stalbanscathedral.org/whatson/christmas-at-st-albans-cathedral . Just sitting and listening in the wonderful St Albans Cathedral can also help you take a moment to destress even if you don’t sing.

Singing is clearly good fun but it is also really good for you. Singing can simply take your mind off the day’s troubles or to boost your mood but it goes further than that, singing is known as a natural anti-depressant, it helps release the feel-good brain chemical that makes you feel uplifted and happy. Singing releases stored muscle tension and decreases the levels of a stress hormone called cortisol in your blood stream. According to some recent research it can also boost the immune system. One study included testing professional choir members’ blood before and after an hour-long rehearsal singing Mozart’s “Requiem”. The researchers noticed that in most cases, the amount of proteins in the immune system that function as antibodies, known as Immunoglobulin A, were significantly higher immediately after the rehearsal.
