On the 1st January 2020 what is becoming a regular St Albans community event is happening again between 11:00 - 15:00 hours at St Albans Sub Aqua Club 80 Cottonmill Lane, St Albans. The Polar Bear Plunge event sees brave people of all ages start the New Year with an icy splash in the outdoor pool of the St Albans Sub Aqua Club – often in fancy dress! All profits raised from the event support local charity Earthworks and guest charity Small Acts of Kindness.
If you are joining the 400+ plucky plungers hopefully you will have already planned your fancy dress. If you come up with a truly unique outfit you might even win a prize. Fancy dress costumes in the past have included a penguin, some Santas, a troupe of a snowman, a giraffe, Banana Man, a ghostbuster, Baywatch characters and even a Buzz Lightyear.
All plungers must bring swimwear and towels. Most people just jump in and straight out, but if you want and are an experience outdoor swimmer you can stay in a little longer for a refreshing New Year swim. After your plunge though it is important to warm up, there are hot showers. Think FEET and HEAD after your plunge says the organisers who also recommend a hat and warm socks to put on after so you get warmed up again as quickly as possible.
All the money goes directly to charity. Adult £18, Child £5, Adult spectator £8, Child spectator free
Book by 30 November for an Early Bear ticket to plunge for £12
If you don’t want to jump in – this year you can do a polar ice bucket challenge rather than leaping in the pool, tickets are available as ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE. If you turn up without booking, you might not get in on the day as the event is very popular and there are restrictions on numbers at the venue even if you are just a spectator.
