With more and more people taking up outdoor swimming it is vital to be safe.  Another organisation that supports those who like to swim outdoors is the Outdoor Swimming Society. After you get over the initial shock of the temperatures they cite a host of physical and mental health benefits of swimming outside, from helping you sleep better to boosting your immune system and improving your mental health.
Swimmers often report a "high" after delving into cold water, and many people take regular dips to fend off depression. This addictive sense of wellbeing and happiness is all down to endorphins. The body's natural painkillers – these happy hormones kick in when you jump in to take the sting away from the cold. The cold also triggers the release of dopamine and serotonin - which help keep us chirpy.
