How do you want your house to smell?

Smell is such a powerful sense so how do you make your St Albans home smell the way you want? There are a host of good ideas to help you stay in control from making your own drawer diffusers with your favourite dried herbs, flowers and spices to using the smell of your favourite washing powder created by taping a dryer sheet to any air vents so air blowing through them will distribute the scent of fresh laundry throughout your home.

If there are smells lingering in your kitchen how about making a stove potpourri? Just get some water simmering in a small saucepan and add one sliced lemon, a sprig of rosemary, a teaspoon of pure vanilla extract in about two inches of water. Once it has come to the boil reduce the heat and let it simmer on low, topping up with water as the water evaporates. You can even use the same pan over several days by just adding more water when necessary.

Did you know you could create your own room spray by mixing a cup of water with two tablespoons of vodka and 25 drops of your favourite essential oil? Experiment with different combinations based on what room you’re spraying maybe lavender and vanilla for a relaxing bedroom, peppermint and rosemary to help to stay alert in your study. Cinnamon, clove and tea tree can be good for the bathroom or kitchen with their natural antibacterial properties.
