Harvest Festival inspiration

As Autumn starts in St Albans and Harpenden memories of school harvest festivals come to mind as we help our kids prepare for theirs. The Christian history of St Albans is hard to miss with the Cathedral dominating the centre of town and it still offers a real focus for celebrating and reflecting on the meaning of the Harvest Festival. Their service has become part of the St Albans and Harpenden Food & Drink Festival and can be celebrated with them at the Cathedral on Sunday 2nd October 2016 from 9.30.

But as we enjoy such plenty their message is simple, “as we give thanks for all that we have, we might want to consider the challenge of how to help those throughout the world who do not have easy access to food or water.” Unfortunately we do not need to look too far from home to find some real need.  The Harvest Festival offers and perfect opportunity to donate gifts of food to support the work of St Albans local FoodBank.
If you are not sure what to give and want to offer more than a tin of soup here are 6 unexpected things that food banks really need.
1. Toilet roll
2. Sanitary towels and tampons
3. Tin openers
4. Nappies
5. Toiletries (shampoo, shower gel, deodorant)
6. Baby food
Some of these items might not seem very Harvest Festivally but perhaps it is better to be giving things that people really need. (This list was originally published on BuzzFeed News on December 23rd 2015.)
