We have all heard about couch to 5K but what about girls on bikes for Five Miles to Fabulous in St Albans? South Herts Cyclists have been running Five Miles to Fabulous since it began as a one-off weekend ride in June 2007. The rides are for women who want to cycle but are put off by the state of the roads and the traffic and the lack of suitable group rides.
The five Miles to Fabulous format is made up of an easy ride incorporating a coffee stop, using quieter roads and traffic free-routes. The ride thus gives an opportunity for riders to both to gain confidence in traffic and discover routes that avoid busy roads.
Dr Rachel Aldred of Cycling UK has said that "transport cycling can’t properly grow in the UK while the conditions suit only the young, male, fit and fearless." St Albans girls on bikes are working on confidence.
Most rides are on Saturday mornings and start and finish at Morrisons, 244 Hatfield Rd, St Albans AL1 4SU. The group meets by the cycle stands, near the pedestrian crossing of Hatfield Road. The cycle usually lasts from 9.30am – 12.30pm. You do not need to be a Cycling UK member to try these rides and they are FREE.
South Herts Cyclists experienced riders are also very welcome on these rides, their support and advice can be really useful to the less experienced cyclist. So come along on Saturday bring any waterproofs if you think it will be wet. Five miles to Fabulous will only cancel if the weather is icy so let’s hope that’s not the case in April!
The exact route will be at the whim of the leader but they always take into account the coffee morning listings in that week's local St Albans or Harpenden news and the preferences of those present. St Albans has a trio of fabulous ride leaders which means they can offer a Further, Faster Fabulous option sometimes on the same day as the 'usual' fabulous offer.
